What: Researchers compared women who had complicated pregnancies with their sisters who experienced uncomplicated pregnancies. They found that an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease in the former group may be influenced not only by the pregnancy but also by shared genes and environments.

Key line: “Our results show that the risk of cardiovascular disease after a pregnancy complication does not depend solely on the pregnancy itself, but can be influenced by genes and environmental factors,” said lead author Ängla Mantel from Karolinska Institutet.
