TOP STORIES TODAY: the most important reads we’ve found, and why they matter.

EVERYTHING

Women with Depression During or After Pregnancy At much Higher Suicide Risk

What: Two studies reviewing nearly a million women in Sweden found that those who had perinatal depression had three times the risk of suicidal behavior and six times the risk of dying by suicide. They also looked at pairs of sisters and found those who had perinatal depression were much more likely to have suicidal behavior, suggesting “depression plays a greater role in these outcomes than genetics or childhood environment.”

Why it matters: This is another piece of the puzzle on mental health and the effects of pregnancy and being a new parent.

FERTILITY

Losing Abortion Access Leads to Fewer People Wanting Kids

What: A survey from Michigan State University found the number of people saying they never wanted children increased by 5 percentage points, from 21% to 26%, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade.

Why it matters: After controlling for demographic factors, the odds of a Michigander not wanting children after the Supreme Court ruling increased by “almost a third.” (!!!)

Ohio Woman Won’t Be Indicted for Miscarriage

What: An Ohio grand jury voted against indicting Brittany Watts for “abuse of a corpse” after she miscarried her nonviable baby at 21 weeks pregnant into the toilet.

Why it matters: Watts faced up to a year in prison, even though doctors had sent her home from the hospital to miscarry on her own. The bizarre prosecution attracted international attention.

Trump Brags About Banning Abortion

What: You may not want to hear about him, but Donald Trump is the most likely nominee to be up against President Joe Biden in November. And last night he bragged about the fall of Roe vs. Wade, saying it was “a miracle” that he made happen.

Why it matters: Trump also told Republicans that they couldn’t fully ban abortion – not because he cares about women’s lives, but because they’d lose elections.

MENOPAUSE

First Lady Jill Biden and Actress Halle Berry Highlight Menopause Research

What: Biden and Berry visited the University of Illinois-Chicago as part of the White House’s initiative on women’s health research. The university research is specifically focused on hot flashes and sleep, and how estrogen affects the brain.

Why it matters: As Biden put it – “”Every woman will be affected by menopause; yet, there’s a stunning lack of information about how to manage and treat its symptoms. UIC is working to change that.” And Berry said: ““I get asked this question all the time, what brought me to this critical and very important work?  And I think I am no different than any other woman right now who reaches their menopausal years or perimenopausal years and they felt like, what the heck is happening to me?”

You Aren’t Crazy – Skincare Really Is More of a Thing Now

What: Skincare product sales grew faster than makeup—typically the market leader–during the recent holiday season.

Why it matters: Maybe it’s a sign that beauty is less about concealing and more about health. Or at least – projecting that idea.
