vampire facials are real

the top things to know in women’s health and wellness today:

  • In an interview covering what he would do in the White House, GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting Donald Trump told Time he “would let red states monitor women’s pregnancies and prosecute those who violate abortion bans.”

  • A federal taskforce reversed earlier recommendations and said women should get mammograms starting in their 40s (as opposed to waiting until they turn 50.) But they did not call for additional imaging for dense breast tissue.

PREGNANCY + POSTPARTUM

The First Six Weeks of Pregnancy, Explained // New York Times
By the time a woman is considered six weeks pregnant, she would have had two weeks, at most, to realize it. That’s because the gestational age of a fetus is counted not from the moment that sperm fertilizes an egg or from the moment you have a positive pregnancy test, but weeks earlier, on the first day of the previous menstrual cycle. This means that just two weeks after a missed period, a woman is six weeks pregnant, said Dr. Dawnette Lewis, director of Northwell Health’s Center for Maternal Health in New York and a maternal fetal medicine specialist.

ABORTION ACCESS

How Far Trump Would Go // Time
…What emerged in two interviews with Trump, and conversations with more than a dozen of his closest advisers and confidants, were the outlines of an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world. To carry out a deportation operation designed to remove more than 11 million people from the country, Trump told me, he would be willing to build migrant detention camps and deploy the U.S. military, both at the border and inland. He would let red states monitor women’s pregnancies and prosecute those who violate abortion bans.

PERIMENOPAUSE

Perimenopause may raise risk of one mental health condition by 40%, study finds // CNN
In the years leading up to menopause, a person can experience a multitude of symptoms, including emotional shifts such as depression. Now, a new study has quantified the risk of depression during the transition, known as perimenopause — showing that women in this stage are about 40% more likely to experience the mental health condition than premenopausal women.

ONCOLOGY

Get screened for breast cancer starting at age 40, new recommendations say // NBC
Women should get a mammogram every other year starting at age 40, according to new guidance issued Tuesday by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. It’s a considerable drop in age from the prior recommendations, which said women should start getting biennial screenings no later than age 50 and suggested that women in their 40s could talk to their doctor about getting screened.
