Study: Pregnancy Is a Stress Test for Your Heart, Even When It Goes Smoothly.
Rutgers researchers tracked women’s cardiovascular health from pregnancy into the years that followed and found that within seven years, 40 percent had developed a cardiometabolic condition. The list included high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. The pattern held even in women whose pregnancies had no complications at all.
The study, published in JAMA Network Open, used a cardiovascular health scoring system during pregnancy and found that lower scores predicted earlier diagnoses of cardiometabolic disease after delivery. The lower the score during pregnancy, the sooner after birth the condition appeared. The researchers describe pregnancy as an underused clinical window for detecting heart risk before it becomes a diagnosis.
What this means for women who have already delivered, or are planning to, is a question the researchers address directly in the paper. The answer points toward something the postpartum care system does not currently do.

The study shows association, not causation. Pregnancy does not cause cardiometabolic disease. But the physiological demands of pregnancy, including increased blood volume, shifts in insulin sensitivity, and cardiovascular load, can expose vulnerabilities that were already present. Women who struggle to adapt to those demands during pregnancy show measurable signals that predict what happens next.
The argument the Rutgers team is making is that those signals should be acted on during and immediately after pregnancy, not ignored until a woman shows up with high blood pressure five years postpartum. Routine cardiovascular screening in the year after delivery, particularly for women who had lower health scores during pregnancy, could catch risk before it compounds. Right now, most postpartum care ends at six weeks.
